Something happened
Kael is 6
Pain. Confusion. Silence.
She can hear nothing but her own thoughts, they echo and ring through her head like church bells in the morning.
[Where am I?]
[What’s going on?]
[I can’t see.]
Whispers.
your eyyyeeesssss your eyyeeeesssssss...
[Am I blind?]
[Am I going to be blind?]
Lights flashing. She senses them, but still can't see.
She can hear. She hears sirens. She hears people, can’t make out what
they’re saying. She catches snatches,
"6 year old female" "house fire" "her father was..." "brain injury"
The rest is all a jumbled mess.
[What's going on?]
[Where are my eyes?]
[Why am I buzzing?]
She can feel her body is there, but she doesn't know which feelings are really hers.
[It hurts.]
She hears voices.
They whisper to her, words she's never heard.
Sssssekka ai naniaaa...
Hhhhhhhollllia aie nea'litaaaaa...
She feels them more than hears, and hears more than she can see.
Her senses are all tangled up, and she is so afraid.
Blurs. Color. Contrast. Fading.
[Dizzy. Not good dizzy. Feel sick.]
Shhhhh Chiiiiiiiilllllld...
Beauuuutifffffful nnnewwww llliiiiight...
Buzzing. Tingling. Ringing. Silence.
Blessed silence.
Then nothing.
--------------------------
Her eyes are open, but she can't feel her body.
She can't see, but she can sense.
She doesn't know where she is.
She hears words, whispers, whimpers, speech... songs?
It's all moving around her head, going so fast she can't pick out what is what.
Her eyes are open. She cannot see.
She hears her name, but it's not her name they are saying.
There are thousands of names.
Someone is telling her a story.
Thousands of stories.
Someone is telling her to wake up.
She starts to regain vision... her vision?
Fragmented images.
Green. Blue. Yellow. White.
Gold. Gold. Gold.
Hands... her hands...
Glowing images.
An angel? No. She is... she is...
Words. Telling her to wake up.
HETSA'YA!
--------------------------
She knows she’s really awake this time. She knows because everything hurts.
She tries to open her eyes, but they won’t open. She sees light from beneath
her eyelids. She’s so confused.
She tries to move, to sit up, to scream, but the all that comes out are small whimpers that she can't control.
“Kael?” She hears.
She tries to speak, but no words will leave her. They circle her head, buzzing, nipping at her skin, pulling at her hair.
Kaaaaeeeeeellllll...
“Go back to sleep baby. You’re going to be okay.”
“H… hurts…” she croaks, her throat hoarse and scratchy.
Shhhh... youuu arrrre ssssssaffffe nnnow...
“It’ll be okay baby. We’re gonna get you some medicine.”
She hears beeping, still can’t see. Shuffling. Shadows.
Her eyes partly open. All she can see are blurs and sharp
colors. She cries.
She hears voices. Can’t make them out. Some loud, some whispers. She can't tell where they're coming from.
Feels warmth in her
hand. It spreads. The darkness fades into nothingness, and the nothing
envelopes her.
“M- my world?” she questions as she fades, slowly drifting and letting the whispers in her head become the silence in her ears.
“Daddy?”
She falls asleep.
